KRG in the Community

Throughout the past academic year, our student-led organizations and research groups have participated in many outreach initiatives. Primarily, they focus on giving back to underrepresented groups and also focusing on young girls interested in STEM.  These types of community outreach events include both on and off-campus locations.  In past years, we have built partnerships with local elementary schools, middle schools, and junior high schools where we would travel to those locations and bring the science into the community through hands on activities and demo shows. More specifically, we have worked with Taft Grade school, Tibbott Elementary and A. Vito Martinez Elementary school. Alongside with demo shows, we have been involved in the judging of science fairs (both virtually and in person) for those emerging scientists in the junior high level. We have also started to collaborate with high schools, such as Montini Catholic High School, to work on implementing the water filtration project into their curriculum.

These types of community outreach events focus on off campus locations. Here we bring both interactive “hands-on” activities for the students to participate in and learn about and typically will also host an interactive demo show where we do bigger demonstrations of reactions and discuss with the crowd the science behind it. Most recently we have worked with Taft Grade school, Tibbott Elementary and A. Vito Martinez Elementary school.
